Pretty bottles vs. proven actives. What’s actually working?
Your feed is full of it: glazed skin, “real actives,” a new peptide something every week, all in beautiful bottles. Influencer skincare has made skincare fun and easy to buy. But when a patient sits in our chair and asks, “Is this actually doing anything?”, the honest answer is: it depends on what you want it to do.

The glaze vs. the change
Influencer skincare is great at making skin look good today. Proven actives like tretinoin, azelaic acid and clindamycin are designed to change how your skin behaves, from clearing acne to fading pigment to rebuilding collagen.

What influencer skincare does well, and where it stops
Brands like Rhode built their following on simple routines, a dewy finish and barrier-friendly formulas. Beautiful textures make it easy to stay consistent, and hydrated skin reflects light. That’s a real benefit.
But a lot of what you’re paying for is the packaging, the texture and the feeling. Many of these products are mostly hydrators, some contain fragrance that can irritate sensitive skin, and few are designed or tested to treat acne, pigment or aging.
The proven actives we trust
These are the workhorses of evidence-based skincare. Each has decades of research behind it, and each needs the right strength, the right routine and the right guidance.
- What it is
- A prescription retinoid (vitamin A) and the most studied anti-aging topical in dermatology.

- Acne, fine lines, rough texture and sun damage. It speeds cell turnover and stimulates collagen.
- Know this
- Expect some dryness and peeling for the first few weeks. Use SPF daily. Not for use during pregnancy.

Tretinoin, clindamycin and prescription-strength azelaic acid require a prescription from a licensed provider after a skin evaluation. Your consultation is where we figure out which, if any, are right for you.
Clearing up two myths
“Natural” is better, and “synthetic” ingredients are bad for your skin.
Tretinoin is lab-made, and it’s the most proven anti-aging topical there is. What matters isn’t natural vs. synthetic. It’s evidence, strength and the right formula for your skin.
“Medical-grade” is an official FDA category.
The FDA only recognizes cosmetics and drugs. Tretinoin, clindamycin and prescription azelaic acid are FDA-approved drugs. Most other skincare is legally a cosmetic.
Alongside prescription options, we carry SkinMedica from Allergan Aesthetics, a clinically studied line we use to round out routines and support your skin around treatments.
Pretty bottles make skin look good today. Proven actives change how your skin behaves next year.
Skin health is bigger than any bottle
Even the best prescription can’t outwork your habits. The biggest factors in how your skin ages are the least glamorous:
Daily SPF
Every day, all year, and essential with tretinoin. In Southern California, it’s non-negotiable.
Sleep & nutrition
They drive inflammation, healing and that lit-from-within glow.
Hormones & life stage
Hormonal acne, pregnancy and menopause all change what your skin needs.
In-office treatments
Morpheus8 and chemical peels reach deeper than any topical can.

Common questions
Do I need a prescription?
Yes, for tretinoin, clindamycin and prescription-strength azelaic acid. They require an evaluation by a licensed provider. Lower-strength azelaic acid and vitamin C are available without one.
Will tretinoin make my skin worse at first?
Many people have dryness, flaking or a few breakouts in the first 4–6 weeks while skin adjusts. Starting slowly, a few nights a week, with a good moisturizer makes a big difference.
Can I use these while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Tretinoin should be avoided during pregnancy. Azelaic acid is often considered an option. Always tell your provider if you’re pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.
Can I keep my influencer products?
Usually, yes. Gentle hydrators and moisturizers pair well with prescription actives. We’ll help you skip anything that clashes, like harsh scrubs or extra acids on tretinoin nights.
How long until I see results?
Azelaic acid and clindamycin often show improvement in 4–8 weeks. Tretinoin’s anti-aging benefits build over 3–6 months of consistent use.
